Alfons Niebuer focuses on strategic solutions for sales, marketing, customer management and customer service. He also advises clients on IT and organizational issues. He is a member of the advisory committee of experts at Fresenius University, leads seminars at the German Insurance Academy (DVA) and often contributes to various trade publications as a guest writer. His clients include insurance companies and major banks.
Alfons Niebuer has over 13 years' experience in strategic corporate consulting. Before contributing to the development of SMP, he worked as a consultant with Roland Berger and dealt with strategic development, restructuring and post merger integration issues until 2000. Previously he was project manager for contract logistics at Deutsche Post.
Alfons Niebuer studied business administration in Cologne, where he also earned his doctorate. Before his studies there, he completed an apprenticeship as an industrial manager at BASF.
He is a keen marathon runner and is married with two sons.
Any marathon runner needs four essentials: structured preparation, endurance, determination to reach the end, and last but not least, the ability to enjoy it! That's probably why I started running marathons and also why I came to SMP. I like projects that have an ambitious goal, a clear structure and a long runtime. My professional development has also followed this pattern – trainee at Bayer, degree with honours at the University of Cologne, doctoral thesis, project manager at Roland Berger and now partner and Board member at SMP. I've been crossing the finish line a couple of times now. But the race goes on. After having finished my first New York City Marathon in 4 hours and 19 seconds my next goal is still completing it in less than 4 hours...
What qualities do friends admire in you?
Commitment, reliability, integrity and remaining true to myself
What challenges do you enjoy taking on?
Anything fun that also challenges me on a personal level.
What's your favourite thing to do after finishing a successful project?
Go home!
What dream do you still have to realise?
My dreams for the near future? Let's see: learn to play the piano, run an alpine and a desert marathon and have enough time to be a good dad to my sons as they're growing up. And if the dreams are not just to stay dreams, it is important to actively address their realisation and to make time for that. The fact is, dreams don't just "happen".
How do you recharge your batteries?
Theoretically, there are endless ways - as long as I'm doing something that I really enjoy.
What adventures lie ahead?
Doing nothing for once! That would be a great adventure for me!
What mistakes can you put up with?
Basically, I can tolerate anything that goes "wrong" in spite of good intentions or just happened accidentally.
What was your biggest achievement at SMP?
Working together with Ingo, Thilo and Peter to turn a small consultancy into a very successful strategic consulting firm. SMP is a good example of the proposition that fun, independence and professionalism fit together really well.
Which personal item would you least like to be separated from?
My running shoes.
What's the motto you live your life by?
Always try your best! This may not always be the best in total but in any case it'll always be my best.
